In 1998, as Brian Schottenheimer began his coaching journey as a young assistant, his father, Marty, personally asked Mike McCarthy to “train” his son. Marty framed the opportunity in simple terms: McCarthy could either embrace it as a chance to develop a young coach or see it as a drain of “wasted emotion.”
Years later, that early mentorship came full circle in Dallas, where Schottenheimer worked under McCarthy for three seasons in various roles. Building on that foundation, he eventually stepped into the top job, becoming the Cowboys’ head coach for the 2025 season.
