In 1978, the NFL increased the regular season from 14 to 16 games and added a second wild-card team to the playoffs. The longer season for most of the teams led to more fatigue. However, the Cowboys used it to solidify their dominance. 

In that first season, the team started slowly, with a 6–4 record. Because the season was longer, Dallas had the ‘extra time’ to find their rhythm. They won their final six regular-season games straight, finishing 12–4. They captured the NFC East title and proved they could handle the increased physical toll of a longer schedule.
