The San Francisco 49ers are expected to hire Matt Eberflus as their assistant head coach of defense, according to multiple reports. Eberflus spent the 2025 season as defensive coordinator for the Dallas Cowboys, which marked his only year in that role with the team. He previously worked in Dallas from 2011 to 2017 as the linebackers coach and added passing game coordinator duties in 2016. The Cowboys parted ways with Eberflus on January 6 after their defense finished last in the NFL in points allowed per game at 30.1.
