Before purchasing the Dallas Cowboys in 1989, Jerry Jones famously attempted to buy the San Diego Chargers. Jones reached an agreement with then-owner Barron Hilton to purchase a majority stake (80%) of the team, with an agreed-upon price of $5.8 million. However, his father, Pat Jones, discouraged him from making that deal due to financial risks. Guess what? Just months later, the AFL-NFL merger was announced, causing the franchise's value to skyrocket to approximately $10 million.
