With just a few days left until the 2026 draft, Dallas has its eyes set on one clear goal: overhauling a defense that allowed a league-worst 30.1 points per game in 2025. Most NFL fans are familiar with Roger Staubach’s service in Vietnam and all about his late-game heroics, recording 23 fourth-quarter comeback victories. However, few realize that the Dallas Cowboys’ first-ever quarterback, Eddie LeBaron, was a Purple Heart and Bronze Star recipient who endured some of the most intense trench warfare of the 20th century before ever taking a snap in Dallas.

That’s where he earned the nickname of “Little General.” In an era during the 1960s when the NFL was shifting toward taller, more pocket-stable quarterbacks, LeBaron stood out as a major outlier at just 5'7" and 160 pounds. Yet, he not only survived but thrived. His small stature often worked to his advantage, allowing him to conceal the ball from defenders during handoffs.

LeBaron noted that he didn't try to look over his linemen but rather between them. By being agile and moving constantly, he could find open "lanes" or windows to throw through that were taller.

He remains the shortest quarterback ever selected for the Pro Bowl, an honour he achieved four times.
