Before “Cowboys” became the team’s official name in 1960, Dallas briefly considered calling their new franchise the “Steers” and then the “Rangers.” Owner Clint Murchison Jr. scrapped both—worried “Steers” might be the butt of too many jokes, and “Rangers” could cause confusion with the local baseball club. Thus, “Cowboys” was born.
