Long after the cheers at AT&T Stadium have faded into memory, the quarterback admits he’s still paying a painful price, speaking openly about the physical toll of his playing days.






Eddie LeBaron was the Dallas Cowboys’ first starting quarterback, an undersized passer with an outsized résumé. A College Football Hall of Famer and Marine Corps hero during the Korean War, he delayed his NFL career after being drafted by Washington in 1950 to serve as a lieutenant. LeBaron retired after the 1959 season to practice law, but the Dallas Cowboys, preparing for their first season, talked him out of retirement. They traded for him, and signed him to a $20,000 contract that included a partnership at a Dallas law firm.
